Natural Hair Journey

Image
Living in West Virginia is a little tough when it comes to natural hair. I was able to go to Charlotte this year and there were so many fabulous ladies there with so many awesome natural styles.  But here in West Virginia the one experience I've had with another African American person was absolutely terrible.  She was still stuck in 1990, talking about perms (when they're really called relaxers).  Natural hair is bad, it's nappy and bad. Even though, I'm sure no one can really tell me why it's bad.   Why because it isn't straight.  Like a white person's? If white people, Latinos, Asians whomever can wear their hair naturally, why can't I? And this is a question I asked myself in September 2010.  And that's when I decided I wasn't going to do things to please other people anymore.  It NEVER works.   So I made some changes and decided to go natural and that was before, I discovered YouTube videos, blogs and other natural hair ca...

Writing Groups

Some writing groups are just awful.  Here are a few tips on how to loose people in your writing group. If you have members who look young, don't assume a mentor-ship role.  Remember you don't know this person, you don't know what kind of behavior would offend them.  Kiddo, you remind me of my son/daughter, champ, tiger. (It's condescending, ridiculous and absolutely takes the focus off the most important thing: the work.) Poor communication.  If you send four, five or six e-mails to one place and you do not get a response chances are you have the wrong e-mail address.  Have the wherewithal to figure that out. People Work.  Some writers actually work.  The reason why they joined a writing group is because they can't live off of their work.  Allow for the person to have some time before writing nasty e-mails about how unprofessional they are because they didn't answer by the deadline that was created.  It's selfish to ...

Millenials: The Even More Lost Generation

One of my favorites movies is Fight Club hence the name of the blog.  It comes from a line in the movie. Anway, there are a few things going on that people either know about it, but don't know what to do about it or don't know about it. In the movie, it describes a bunch of late 20 year olds to early 30 year olds about how their life has no purpose.  It's a rebellious film.  Which is probably why I like it so much but that is not my point. Even though Fight Club wasn't about Millenials, the whole idea still applies. We are a generation without definition.  We don't have anything to stand for, we can't decide what to be involved with so that future generations can look back and say what great men and women we were.  Instead we're coddled and hand held and just wandering. We can't be defined by our jobs because we're overeducated individuals who answer phones for a living.  We are a generation of people who were told that we were special and ...

Seriously Credit Card Companies? Seriously?!

My last post was in September so it just goes to show how busy I've been.  But I'm pretty annoyed or happy about a few things.  So I thought I'd share. I recently got two credit cards, one for JC Penny and one for the Limited.  Because my Bloomingdales card is maxed out.  No...just kidding.  I've had this new job for almost a year; I've paid off some bills so I figure I am financially secure enough to get these cards. Besides I work in a corporate office and people are starting to notice the holes in my sweaters.  Again, I'm kidding. At any rate, both compaines require you to call to activate the card.  But it's all a russe to get you to call to agree to some bogus fee you don't need. Pay Protection Insurance, Credit Card Protection Plan, like the devil it assumes many names.  And like they devil to sweeten the pot they throw in something that you are programmed to think you need.  A 40% gift card.  But with the money they'll be ...

But I Did Everything Right Or So I Thought Blog

This isn't about anything in the media or what I regularly talk about here, but it's about something that's near and dear to my heart.  http://butidideverythingrightorsoithought.blogspot.com/ But I Did Everything Right Or So I Thought Blog. It's a perfect name, because it's something that's rang in my head for the past year and a half.  I went to school and got my degree in Communications and Technology and a minor in English.  Why?  Because I enjoyed it and I was good at it. I'm not saying that because I went to college that I should be guaranteed a job, but on a regular basis I wonder if I made the right decision.  I'm 24 years old and not working in the field of my choice.  Should I have gone about this another way?  But which way is that?  I would never have been able to apply for a job as a Public Relations Assistant or a Assistant to a Communications Director with only a high school diploma, I would lose against the person with the c...
